Bonito: What to Keep In Mind:
There’s a reason Bonito is called the capital of Ecotourism. The pristine waters and lush greenery are home to a diverse range of insects, plants, and even some microscopic critters. To ensure a comfortable and healthy trip, here are some things to keep in mind:
Insect bites: Mosquitoes and other insects are prevalent in Bonito. Pack insect repellent with DEET and wear long-sleeved clothing during dusk and dawn, which are peak mosquito feeding times.
Fungal infections: The humid environment can increase the risk of fungal infections. Wear breathable clothing and shoes that dry quickly, especially after water activities. Consider using antifungal powder on your feet.
Dehydration: The sun and outdoor activities can lead to dehydration. Stay hydrated by carrying a reusable water bottle and sipping water frequently, especially during hikes and excursions.
Tantalize Your Taste Buds: Must-Try Dishes of Mato Grosso do Sul
Bonito’s culinary scene offers a delicious glimpse into the region’s culture. Here are some must-try dishes to tantalize your taste buds:
Café Quebra Torto: This hearty breakfast translates to “break-the-bad” coffee and is designed to fuel your adventures. Imagine a plate overflowing with “arroz carreteiro” (savory rice with sun-dried meat), farofa (toasted cassava flour), eggs, bacon, fresh cheese, and local fruits – a complete and energizing meal to kickstart your day.
Costelão de Pacu: This dish features succulent pacu ribs, a white fish native to the region, slow-cooked over charcoal until tender and flavorful. It’s typically served with rice, beans, and a tangy vinaigrette.
Doce de Mamão: Don’t miss out on this sweet treat! Doce de Mamão is a creamy papaya candy made with condensed milk and spices. It’s a perfect way to end your meal on a light and refreshing note.
Tereré: A typical drink from Mato Grosso do Sul, inherited from Paraguay, tereré is one of the main elements of the culturel. The drink consists of a specific type of mate herb, prepared with cold water and consumed through a “bombilla” (a kind of straw that filters the water surrounded by the herb).

Guru Bonus Tips
The cellular internet signal in the city is not exemplary. It ends up being functional in the downtown area, but practically nonexistent in the more remote areas, where the main attractions are located.
Therefore, if you are traveling by car, it is recommended to download the map on apps like Google Maps to use it offline and ensure navigation during the route.
But don’t despair! It is common to find Wi-Fi available at attraction ticket offices and restaurants, which facilitates the use of services like Pix for payment. However, during trails, snorkeling, and the tours themselves, it is expected that you will be without internet connection.

Overrated – The Guru expected more
Located 23 km from downtown, Abismo Anhumas is a kind of crevice that leads you to a cave. The place is impressive and is one of the most famous tours in the city. However, its cost is quite high.
The cheapest visit, for contemplation only, costs an average of USD $ 200, and can go up to USD$ 400 for the most expensive and complete package on site. The truth is that by paying much less, you can visit other tourist spots (including caves) that are as stunning as the abyss.
Underestimated – Surprised the Guru
One of the coolest and most surprising curiosities of the city, which almost no one knows, is that it was elected as one of the safest destinations in the world, precisely because it has a Security Management System (SGS), to prevent any accidents, raising tourism standards.
It is also worth noting that the municipality was awarded an international safe tourism seal called “Safe Travels,” created by the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Bonito also has the international Responsible Tourism seal, which ensures that all attractions in the region comply with the required safety protocols, as well as being completely eco-sustainable tours and attractions.
Common Mistakes
The crystal-clear waters of Bonito might be tempting, but for the sake of your health, it’s important to avoid drinking straight from the rivers, waterfalls, or springs. Here’s why:
Mineral Content: While the water may look pristine, it’s often rich in minerals like calcium carbonate (limestone) and magnesium. These minerals, although not harmful, can cause stomach discomfort and diarrhea.
Potential Contamination: Despite its beauty, natural water sources can harbor unseen bacteria and parasites. Bottled water is readily available throughout the town and ensures a safe and refreshing way to stay hydrated.
By following these tips, you can avoid a common pitfall and ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience in the paradise of Bonito.
